In 1999 well before the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan and initiation of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) program, the U.S. Army began a Foreign Comparative Test to determine the most appropriate vehicle to serve as the Mine Protected Clearance Vehicle for the Ground Standoff Minefield Detection System (GSTAMIDS) Block 0 Program. After various test in June 2001, the U.S. Army finally selected the Lion II. The manufacturer, Technical Solutions Group, was asked to rework the design. After vehicle refinement it received the name Buffalo Mine Protected Clearance Vehicle (MPCV). As of today the Buffalo MPCV is the only vehicle which was procured under Category III of the MRAP program.
