BW – Sanitätstrupp Wiesel 2
Sanitätstrupp Wiesel 2
Originally the Bundeswehr ordered 20 Wiesel Ambulances on 21 September 2001. Delivery took place from May-December 2003. In mid-December 2006, Rheinmetall Landsysteme received a second order for an additional 13 vehicles. With the Wiesel 2 Ambulance, the medical service of the army was given a light, air-transportable vehicle that can be employed to evacuate wounded personnel under armour protection, even in difficult terrain. The kit carried on the vehicle allows its crew to provide first aid and to stabilise the patient. Large red crosses on a white backing clearly identify them as medical vehicles. On purpose, the vehicle was not fitted with an MG3 weapon or a smoke grenade discharger system.
The crew of the Wiesel 2 Ambulance comprises the driver/medic and two paramedics. In addition to the crew, the vehicle can transport one wounded on a stretcher and one sitting wounded. Easy access to the crew compartment is granted by a large two-piece door in the rear that swings open to the outside. Medical equipment was provided by the company Binz. The kit, which was assembled to allow the crew to stabilise and assist the vital functions of a patient as well as to prepare him for transport, includes field oxygen resuscitation apparatus, an aspirator device that can be controlled by foot, shock treatment equipment and a vacuum mattress with pump. Also carried are woollen blankets, a stretcher on which a patient can be transported in shock position, a scoop stretcher, medical response bags and a blanket-type canvas rescue stretcher. In addition to an SEM 80 VHF radio mounted under the stretcher, the vehicle has been fitted with an AN/PSN-11 Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR) mounted in the front-left area of the crew compartment.
