The M109A6 Paladin, being the most technologically advanced SPH in the US Army, provides the primary indirect fire support to armoured brigade combat teams (ABCT) and non-divisional heavy-fires battalions. It features improvements in the areas of survivability, reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM), responsiveness and terminal effects. The most visible change compared to former M109 variants is the new turret with the 155mm M284 cannon. The larger turret featuring a Kevlar spall liner and supplemental armour for increased protection was necessary to include the new Micro-Climatic Conditioning System, secure voice and digital communication, GPS navigation system, enlarged ammunition storage, segregated hydraulic systems and an automatic fire control system.
