The M992 is basically the chassis of a standard M109 155mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) with the turret replaced by a fully enclosed superstructure having the same protection level as the rest of the vehicle. Sometimes the vehicle is referred to as the Carrier Armored Tracked (CAT). Parallel to the upgrade of M992A0s and M992A1s to M992A2 standard, the US Army ordered an additional 132 M992A2s for the National Guard, and the first of these vehicles was completed in June 1998.
