With the handover of the first GTK Boxer series production vehicle on 23 September 2009 by the firms Rheinmetall Defence and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) to the European procurement organisation OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’armement) and Germany’s BWB agency for military equipment and procurement (Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung), a new chapter started for the Bundeswehr regarding highly mobile, armoured transport vehicles. Based on current plans, series production of the GTK Boxer armoured personnel carrier (APC, or gepanzertes Transportkraftfahrzeug) will include 403 vehicles for the German Bundeswehr and 200 vehicles for the Koninklijke Landmacht of the Netherlands. The Bundeswehr will receive 256 APCs (Gruppentransportfahrzeuge), 65 Command Vehicles (Führungsfahrzeuge), 72 heavy armoured Ambulance Vehicles (schwere geschützte Sanitätskraftfahrzeuge) and ten Driver Training Vehicles (Fahrschulfahrzeuge).
