In August 2008, the U.S. Government conducted a large market survey to determine if it would use a commercial off the shelf procurement process for the acquisition of a lightweight, armored, high mobility wheeled vehicle to meet urgent requirements from units deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. From its inception the new vehicle was designated the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV). The first M-ATVs were transported to Afghanistan via cargo aircraft on 5 October 2009. As of February 2010, 800 M-ATVs were deployed to Afghanistan.
