Panzerhaubitze 2000 A2

In 2010 the Bundeswehr modified seven Panzerhaubitze 2000 A1 to the improved A2 standard. The vehicles replaced the Panzerhaubitze 2000 A1 Self-Propelled Howitzers deployed in Afghanistan. The main features of the improvement package were an air-conditioning system in the hull, air-conditioning system for the charge compartment, as well as more powerful Stromerzeugeranlage SEA 8kW auxiliary power unit that replaced the earlier version. From 2013 onwards, an additional 27 howitzers were upgraded to the A2 standard. The improvement were necessary to address an urgent operational requirement issued to ensure the SPHs could be used even in extreme heat. The armament consists of the 155mm L/52 cannon, a 7.62mm x 51 MG3 air defence machine gun and a 76 smoke discharger system with eight launchers.

According to current plans, a total of 108 Panzerhaubitze 2000 are to be modernized to extend their service life beyond 2040. The crew is to be reduced through automation, the range is to be increased from the current 30km to approximately 75km, and protection, secondary armament, radio and control equipment are to be improved. The Panzerhaubitze 2000 is to be used in the artillery units of the mechanised brigades. Two additional batteries are currently being activated.
