As early as April 1991, immediately following Operation Desert Storm, the U.S. Military Police School sent a Requirement Operational Capability document to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRACDOC) requesting approval for a new Armored Securtiy Vehicle (ASV) which had been a Military Police priority for some time. The 18th MP Brigade, based in Germany, was issued the first six M1117 Guardian series production vehicles in August 2000, which were delivered to the 615th MP Company in Vilseck and the 527th MP Company in Giessen.
