BW – Schützenpanzer Marder 1A5 with MELLS ATGM
Schützenpanzer Marder 1A5 with MELLS ATGM
On 16 April 2018, the 9th Armour Demonstration Brigade in Munster was the first Bundeswehr unit to receive permission to use the new MELLS anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Technology and In-Service Support with their Marder 1A5 AIFVs. Initially, 35 Marders used as part of the NATO VJTF 2019 will be equipped with this system. Furthermore, integration of the MELLS in remaining Marder AIFVs and Wiesel TOW Weapon Carriers is currently being examined. The aim of integrating the MELLS on the Marder 1A5 is replacement of the currently used MILAN (Missile d′Infanterie Léger Antichar) ATGM, since the operational end of this system will be reached in the foreseeable future. The Bundeswehr fielded a total of 44 MELLS kits in December 2017. Each vehicle carries two MELLS ATGMs. The main armament consists of the MK 20mm Rh 202 automatic cannon, the coaxial 7.62mm x 51 MG3 Maschine Gun and the 76mm smoke grenade discharger system with six launchers.
