Today, the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank remains the main weapon system of the U.S. Army, Army National Guard and U.S.M.C. armor battalions. The M1 Abrams is the only main battle tank in the U.S. Armed Force inventory powered by a gas turbine. It was developed to replace the ageing M48 and M60 main battle tanks which had entered service in the 1950s and 1960s.
