The FMTV had its origin in a U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC9 issued requirements document from 1983 calling for a Medium Tactical Truck (MTT). It was orginally intended that the MTT should replace the U.S. Army`s ageing Vietnam-era M35/M44 Series 2.5-ton 6×6 trucks. The MTT requirement was soon quashed on technical grounds and in October 1984, the U.S. Army isused a revised requirement catalogue for a new generation of tactical trucks named Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV).
